What is religion?

“But, what is religion?”, I asked, adding, “Just a way to impose morality on a naturally immoral species. Without the fear of God, a central figure in most religions, we’d be busy cutting throats and have no time to build these moral structures which make up the foundation of civilization.” – an excerpt from an interesting conversation with a religious friend.

A control mechanism spanning these man-created institutions. Religion in itself has become an institution. We change the meanings of words as we see fit.
A person following a simple ideology reflecting his faith, is often made fun of by saying “What are you a saint?”

I just hope that the real insight hidden the contemporary bloated and kitsch-laden institutions is not lost.
